On November 24, 2022 in the early morning, at the entrance to the port of Tangier-Ville, a team of Moroccan security officers arrested a French citizen in possession of 12 kilograms of cannabis resin. An operation that could seem routine in the city of Detroit, as the arrests of drug traffickers in this region of the kingdom, a place of junction with Europe, are common. Except that this time, the man who was intercepted is a soldier, a member of the crew of the French frigate Surcouf.
French drug lord arrested in Morocco
Stopping in Tangier for several days, this ship of the French Navy took part in the naval exercise CHEBEC22, organized jointly with the Royal Moroccan Navy (which took part in it, with the frigate Allal Ben Abdellah). An exercise which is part of the military cooperation between Morocco and France, and which aims to maintain the ability of the navies of the two countries to operate jointly to respond to crisis situations at sea.
No official reaction
The charge d’affaires of the French embassy in Rabat, Arnaud Pescheux, who has been acting since Hélène Le Gal’s departure from Morocco last August, is silent moreover, went aboard the Surcouf in Tangier, two days before this incident, on November 22, in order to meet officials of the French Navy and get an idea of this exercise, which allowed, among other things, professional exchanges useful to both countries, including diving training. Via a tweet shared on the page of “France in Morocco”, Arnaud Pescheux “ welcomed the interoperability between the Marine nationale and the Royal Navya decisive asset for responding together to the challenges of tomorrow”.
For the moment, neither Morocco nor France have reacted to the announcement of this arrest.
