JA DECRYPTION – First expected in 2017, then in 2019 and 2022, the Abidjan urban train, called the “Abidjan metro”, will not be operational before 2025. And the first trains, 26 in number, will be visible in the Ivorian economic capital at leave 2024, according to the new timetable communicated by the government. Released from the boxes in 2011 by Alassane Ouattara as soon as he came to power, this project, designed in the 1970s by the Department and Control of Major Works, the ancestor of the National Bureau of Technical Studies and Development (BNETD), puts more longer than expected to take place.
1. Why is the construction site taking so long to start?
First penalized by the severe economic crisis of the 1980s in Côte d’Ivoire, with the end of the Ivorian miracle, the Abidjan metro who, at its origins, was supposed to become reality in the 1990s, has suffered since its exhumation from numerous constraints. The route of the metro line was, for example, to lead to the destruction of part of the Banco forest, a lush area of nearly 3,500 hectares in the heart of Abidjan. This did not fail to provoke an outcry from environmentalists. President Alassane Ouattara had to modify by decree the limits of this forest, which shelters in its basement part of the water table what uses Abidjan.
