We ended up despairing of this America which, in the past, had so often shown the example. This country, which has always had the role of pulling the Western world upwards, has, over the past eight years, been bogged down in the swamp left as a legacy by George W. Bush and his administration.
A half-breed with a dazzling career
The stupidest and laziest policy in living memory has nevertheless resulted in a burst, a quasi-redemption. The United States, where black people have only enjoyed their civil rights for less than half a century, has at their head Barack Hussein Obama, 47. A metis with a dazzling career, intelligent, cultured, a brilliant orator, knowing how to surround himself and stay tuned.
Barack Obama mourns “Mama Sarah”, his grandmother who told him about Kenya
Quite the opposite, in short, of its predecessor. A man who collects records: first black to accede to the White House, fourth youngest president in the history of the country (behind Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton), first “black” editor of the prestigious Harvard Law Review, highest spending candidate of all time: $639 million for his campaign budget!
How could we be so blind? What has just happened is an extraordinary step forward, a revolution. In four years, America re-elected Bush and then threw itself into Obama’s arms. Almost no one has taken the measure of the profound changes underway within this society which escapes, it is true, the ordinary reading grids. The United States knows the world poorly, but it must be recognized that the world does not know the United States better.

The enthusiasm aroused by Obama’s election is also a great first. In twenty-two months, the illustrious stranger has become a planetary idol, phenomenon extremely rare among politicians… The whole world applauds wildly? So much the better. Tears of joy, emotion, in Paris, London, Madrid, Beijing, Tunis, Dakar, Nairobi or Sydney? Cheer. But would all those who welcome this election – our leaders in the first place – be ready to vote for a half-breed in their own country? Perhaps it is better not to have an answer to this question…
He succeeds “Calamity George”
Barack Obama can only measure the magnitude of the task ahead, even if he can’t do worse than “Calamity George”. He enjoys an aura such that he will easily be forgiven for the inevitable mistakes. He is “equipped” intellectually to carry out the announced labors of Hercules. He benefits from a (high) quality family and professional environment.
United States: Obama told by his exes
A dynamic has been set in motion which should see the virtues of dialogue take precedence over brute force and unilateralism. The year 2008, which until now rhymed with fear and turmoil, therefore ended on an unexpected note of hope. But we are only at the beginning of a new world. Let us take advantage of this new deal, especially in Africa, to show America that it is not the prerogative of bon sens…
