End of the soap opera around the training jersey of the Algerian national football team: summoned on September 27 by the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication to withdraw “this collection within 15 days”, on the grounds that it constitutes a theft of the national heritage of Morocco, Adidas has just published a press release in which it announces that an agreement has been reached between the of them parties.
Morocco-Algeria: Rabat threatens Adidas with legal proceedings for the Fennecs jersey
“After constructive discussions between Adidas and the Moroccan Ministry of Culture, indicates the equipment manufacturer, we can confirm a positive legal agreement in relation to the recent case of football shirts”. The brand also acknowledges in the same press release that “the design was indeed inspired by the pattern of zellige mosaics”.
“This case has highlighted the importance of defending our cultural heritage and the ancestral know-how of Moroccan craftsmanship”, comments the lawyer for the Ministry of Culture, Maître Mourad ElAddi, who had not missed to recall that these motifs used “are inspired by those visible in the monuments of the medina of Fez and on the site of Chellah, all inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981 and 1985”.
The Algerian federation plans to terminate its contract
Adidas, which says it regrets the controversy surrounding these warm-up outfits for footballers of the Algerian selection, also expressed his “deep respect for the people and the craftsmen of Morocco”, affirming: “We are opposed to any act which undermines the cultural integrity and the historical heritage of people and nations in the world. »
Beyond this mea culpa from Adidas, the question remains: will these jerseys be withdrawn as initially requested by Rabat? Or does the agreement mention the possibility of using them on condition that part of the profits are returned to Moroccan craftsmen who hold the rights?
Contacted by JA, the Moroccan Ministry of Culture declares that it does not have any further details on this subject for the moment. For its part, the Algerian Football Federation does not seem satisfied with Adidas’ approach and is considering terminating the contract which binds it to the German giant. Twists are therefore encore possible.
