INVESTIGATION – In Libreville, on this Sunday in August, the church of the Fraternité Saint-Pie-X is full of faithful. Listening to the mass pronounced in Latin, the inhabitants of the capital observe the gestures of the priest positioned back. Among them, many children from schools adjoining the mission, Notre-Dame-de-la-Providence for girls and Juvénat-du-Sacré-Coeur for boys. Every week, there are few, if any, absentees. Attendance at Sunday services is compulsory for pupils of these institutions.
Here, hardly anyone has heard of the accusations hanging over the Brotherhood. We do not know. Or we do not want to know, like some of the oldest parishioners, who knew Fathers Patrick Groche and Damian Carlile. Beyond the accusations against it in Gabon, the Society of Saint Pius X was also at the heart of many cases in the years 2000 and 2010, which sometimes gave rise to criminal convictions.
