“A state secret. This is the expression used by certain Moroccan employees of the Israeli liaison office in Rabat when they are questioned about the “David Govrin affair”. At the beginning of September, accused of “irregularities”, the “ambassador” of the Jewish state and his staff were the subject of an investigation carried out on the spot by several Tops officials of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The list of alleged misdeeds and excesses is long and includes allegations of “sexual harassment” and “sexual exploitation” against David Govrin and senior Israeli officials, disappearances of diplomatic gifts – including a valuable present from the King Mohammed VI -, “procurements without respect for the law”, the unexplained presence of the mysterious businessman Samy Cohen at meetings between diplomats and Israeli ministers, a chaotic management, and a conflicting atmosphere between David Govrin and some of his collaborators.
Morocco: Israel recalls its ambassador
Faced with this explosive situation, the Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alon Ushpiz, decided to recall David Govrin and a large part of his team on September 6. A week later, on September 14, Israeli diplomacy – which continues to this day its investigations concerning the “Govrin Gate” – even appointed a new acting head of the Rabat liaison office: Alona Fisher, ex-ambassador of Israel in Serbia. As for David Govrin, his possible return to Rabat seems very compromised.
