Between the Secretary General (SG) of Istiqlal, Nizar Baraka, and Hamdi Ould Errachid, who played a decisive role in his election at the head of the political party, everything was fine… until the urge took hold. this last, notorious maker (and unmaker) of “kings” within the party, to become “king” himself.
Galvanized by the power of his family clan, as well as by his financial strike force, the deputy mayor of Laayoune has multiplied in recent weeks the maneuvers to overthrow the SG of the Libra party.
It all started in May, during the retreat of the executive committee in Harhoura, when the man who is nicknamed the “lord of the Sahara” sought to change via ses support the statutes of the Istiqlal to remove all the seats “ex officio” within the National Council –- deputies, municipal elected officials, party inspectors.
Morocco: Istiqlal, new arbiter of political life?
A measure which, by reducing the number of representatives sitting on the National Council to 500 (instead of 1,200) would have enabled Ould Errachid, president of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra Regional Council, to better control the party in the run-up to the congress scheduled for September, which must elect the training management (SG and committee executive).
