Throughout his tenure as president, his medical condition has been the subject of rumours. But for a week, the information filtering on this subject has been alarming. According to the reference Portuguese daily Expressformer Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos, 79, is “between life and death”, hospitalized in intensive care for a few days at the Teknon medical center in Barcelona, Spain.
The deterioration of his state of health, confirmed par from official sources to the Portuguese Press Agency Lusa, explains the trip to Spain on June 29 of the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, responsible for monitoring the situation. That same day, a meeting is to be held between members of the dos Santos family and the medical team in charge of the former head of state, according to the Angolan press.

Questioned on June 28 by the Portuguese private television channel SIC, José Filomeno de Sousa dos Santos, the first son of the former president, who cannot leave Luanda due to legal proceedings for corruption, confirmed the hospitalization of his father while affirming “continue to hope for an improvement in his state of health”.
Exile in Barcelona since 2019
Strong man of Angola for thirty-eight years, between 1979 and 2017, José Eduardo dos Santos has been living in Barcelona since April 2019. The Teknon medical center is part of the private hospital group Quirónsalud, which has also the Quirón Clinic, where former Gabonese President Omar Bongo Ondimba died in 2009.

Relations between the former Angolan head of state and his successor, João Lourenço, from the same party as him, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), remain tense due to the anti-corruption crusade waged by Lourenço, which notably targets members of the former presidential family and former relatives of the dos Santos clan.
In September 2021, José Eduardo dos Santos returned to Luanda, his only return to the country since leaving power. During his stay, he received twice, at the end of December and the beginning of March, the current President Lourenço in his residence in the Miramar district of Luanda, before returning to Barcelona to follow treatments medical.
