Kaya: “David” from Burkina Faso against “Goliath” the French drone – Capcov

A drone shot down by a slingshot in a Burkinabe city? Thus are born the legends: the device would be French and the sniper a demonstrator of about fifteen years …

In a Burkina Faso that has become a labyrinth for a French military convoy tossed between Kaya and Ouagadougou, via Laongo, the soap opera offered since the end of last week has everything of a burlesque running-gag. Faced with this crossover between frozen French soldiers, inflexible demonstrators and local police forces embarrassed in the workings, an outside observer would have been quite unable to fully understand the behavior of each of the three parties.

This undoubtedly adds to the excitement offered to the jihadists who are reaping the fruits of the seeds of chaos sown for years. Above all – climax! – when two trucks belonging to the Burkinabè army were taken to task, by mistake, when they had to supply soldiers engaged in the North against terrorism. National opinion had just denounced the lack of food for troops at the front …

Symbolic and exaltation

In the midst of this irrational mess, suddenly comes a moment of grace that the best storytellers would never have dared to plan. On the third day of the blockade imposed in the town of Kaya by slayers of the French military presence in Faso, a child shoots down a drone with a slingshot …

Carried in triumph, the teenager who would be 15 years old has all of a Gavroche, named after this character of the Miserable who offered his juvenile breast to the disputed armed forces. But this young Burkinabè does not fall like Gavroche. Rather like David, the character of the Old Testament, he defeats a giant armed to the teeth. A slingshot for one, for the other: a slingshot. The giant Goliath for one, for the other: nothing less than the army of the former colonist … If we are to believe the first fiery posts on social networks.

Certainly, doubt would persist as to the registration of the said drone in the arsenal of Operation Barkhane. Certainly, the remote-controlled aircraft is not a combat aircraft. Of course, the French battalion in the Sahel is not beheaded like Goliath. But the symbolism is too strong to resist the exaltation. There is nothing more African and more childish – supposedly fragile – than the slingshot which is used to hunt the margouillats. There is no more “exotic” – Western understand – than an unmanned flying object.

Cliché and T-shirts

In need of galvanization since the popular uprising of 2014, the crowd carries in triumph the rebellious child and his weapon of the poor: here is virally invested “the little one who brought down the drone of the French army with a slingshot” . Hardly the snapshot seen by most local netizens, it is the drone trophy that is exhibited on Youtube, in the form of a piece of the shredded device already propelled to the rank of relic. Then the budding graphic designers of Faso disseminate a kind of logo where the handle and the elastic of the teenage sniper replace the “Y” of “Kaya”. Second degree or venality? Others already affix a price, 5,000 CFA francs, to a T-shirt model flocked with a slingshot …

A lot of noise for nothing ? The military convoy evaporated in Niger, it remains for the Burkinabè authorities to explain how a foreign army can carry out warning shots a stone’s throw from their ears and how the “social media manipulators” denounced by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs can rule, more than 24 hours, in a peaceful town in West Africa …
